Installing today in the #likelygeneralgallery , ‘Children of a Midnight Spring’, an exhibition of oil paintings by Olivia Di Gregorio.
I am honoured and elated to present Olivia’s first solo show within our humble walls. Her work extraordinarily captures the liminal landscape of both the internal and external oft magical feelings surrounding dreams, fears, traumas, and of course, the creative. I’ve been truly in love with it for some time.
The show runs all month long and will be available to view beginning tomorrow. Our gallery hours follow our store hours. Thank you for your remarkable warmth and trust, Olivia.
Exhibition Text:
‘Children of a Midnight Spring’ is inspired by changelings, transformation, and the creation of safe spaces. The series uses the stories of changelings from literature and from loved ones as a metaphor to communicate the idea of disappearance, and survival in fantastically isolated landscapes.
Olivia’s oil paintings are made to echo sentiments of healing while contributing to dialogues about mental health. They introduce transformative elements, adding complexity to landscapes of a dream world. These images often act as a visual escape, as well as a means of understanding experiences and what they mean to us. She prefers to believe this action is seen and experienced through the painting, as one looks into the worlds laid before them.
Her work explains dreams and the things loved in a language inspired by the PreRaphaelites; each painting drawing on images from history, mythology, and mysticism to develop their narrative.

Go see Why the @#&! Do You Paint? yet?
The Gladstone’s 5th annual Why the @#&! Do You Paint? ( #WTFDYP2019 ) group painting show explore the theme “What Does It All Mean?” The introduction of the camera aided in changing the focus of painting away from representation and realism towards many different forms of expression. With this, the meaning of the work has surpassed the aesthetics. The fifth-year anniversary of Why the @#&! Do You Paint focuses on the meaning or message within the work, packed with meaning and painted to “perfection”. Join us for the Opening Reception of #wtfdyp2019 on October 10th, 7-10 pm in our 2nd Floor Gallery!

I am honoured to announce the next artist in the #likelygeneralgallery for the approaching month of November. We will be welcoming the mesmeric oil paintings of Olivia Di Gregorio into our little community gallery portal. This will be Olivia’s first solo show but she is not at all unfamiliar to exhibitions. I can’t recall when I first stumbled upon her work but I can distinctly remember the feeling: transported to a place that feels both familiar and not, an ache and wonder for more.

Children of a Midnight Spring
an exhibition by Olivia Di Gregorio
November 5 - 29
Likely General Gallery
389 Roncesvalles Ave
Reflections from Olivia:
‘Having always been reflections of my journal writings, my oil paintings tell people with more sincerity than I could ever manage otherwise, about what I care for in that moment’s depiction. They explain my
dreams in a language inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites, with my latest subjects focusing on tragic, missing identities, and survivalism in realms of individual solitudes. I look to mythological creatures like fairies, changelings, and elements of magic to allow for my work to quietly communicate secrets, adding complexity to landscapes of a dream world. My work is a visual escape, as well as a means of understanding
experiences and what they mean to us.’
Olivia Di Gregorio is an internationally exhibited and published painter based in Toronto, featuring mythical figures in dream-like landscapes throughout her work. Her images look to mythology for inspiration, with fairies and elements of magic to explain a healing shift from one state into another as a form of visual escapism.
Di Gregorio graduated from OCAD University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Design in Illustration, and a minor in Drawing & Painting. She has recently been selected as a finalist in the Beautiful Bizarre Magazine
Art Prize in the traditional art category, exhibited at Modern Eden in San Francisco using a grant awarded from the Ontario Arts Council, and published in Booooooom’s ‘Tomorrow’s Talent Vol. II’ curated art book.

So excited to announce my first solo show, ‘Children of a Midnight Spring’, at @likelygeneral !
It’s an honour to be working with the fantastically thoughtful @brookeisloom , and it’s amazing that we finally get the chance to debut new work together, never before seen in person! I’m glad some of these pieces get to see the sun outside of my studio for a bit 💖
The exhibition will run from November 5th - 29th. There won’t be an opening night party because of Covid restrictions, but I’ll be visiting the gallery on November 5th for a little bit if you want to say hello and talk about the work! Feel free to let me know if you want to visit the exhibition together sometime too, its been a long while in quarantine
